Would You Like to Know What it is Like to Own a Business in Spain?
If you are thinking of moving to Spain to run a bar, café or restaurant, or are interested in what such a move is going to be like, then this is for you.
As well as covering the things you need to know, it gives real example and is a fun read. It’s not a text book, and it’s not a list of facts. It is a good read for all......
October 1999, England.
So there was I, 44 years old and working my butt off as a sales manager for a large insurance company in the UK, developing a new type of sales team, recruiting and adding new salespeople to this team, as well as developing those whom I had inherited.
I lived with my wife and two teenage daughters in the north-east of England, and I looked after the whole of Scotland, and the borders of Scotland and England, which required me to do lots and lots of travelling and stay overnight in various parts of Scotland. Motel chains, the A1 and the A69 and I became well acquainted in the year or so that I had been responsible for the new team.

Out of the blue I receive a phone call from the boss, telling me that I needed to go to the company’s national training centre on the following day – “something has come up, can’t say what” – I love a mystery.
The news is simple guys, “head office has decided that the new project that we are working our butts out on has had the plug pulled”. There are jobs for all of us managers, but not the salespeople. Alternatively we can take a golden handshake. “How much” reverberates around the room!
I had worked for the company for almost 16 years, and had taken on all sorts of sales, management and educational roles. I had loved them all, and my income had been excellent. We had out of necessity, moved from one area of the country to another area so that my career could develop. Our two daughters had grown up in the new area, and had few memories of their early life in the old town. The old town was never “home” to them. By now, they had both left school and gone in to the type of work that they wanted to be in (after a false start or two). Maybe it was our time to change and do something off the wall. I wouldn’t say I worked away a lot, but when younger, one of my daughters wanted something and came over to me and called me mummy, I knew it was a tad too much!...........
7 1/2 years later, we accepted a brilliant offer for the business and it was now time to plan the finances. The money from the business sale would be invested in stocks and shares to provide us with a good income. Date August 2008 - what can possibly go wrong?
